The first king of Norway, a Viking, was Olaf II Haraldsson, affectionately referred to as St. Olaf. He is the patron saint of the nation.
Born in 955AD, he reigned over Norway from 1015 - 1028. He was forced to abandon the crown and flee to Russia. He died in the battle of Stiklestad on July 29, 1030AD.
His feast day is celebrated each year in Norway with festivities and bonfires.
